Spring forward with the newest Beats & Burn playlist, our collaboration with Portland's local, independent radio station XRAY.fm.  This month's mix is brought to you by The Ambassador (a.k.a Allen Thayer)a veteran DJ with past residencies in NYC and SF before returning home to Portland where he's been rocking the occasional Thursday night at Dig A Pony and hosts an all Brazilian radio show, The Rio Deal: Bossa Nova and Beyond on XRAY.fm, Sundays at 8AM. Mining his extensive vinyl library for funky nuggets and danceable discs, he prefers to keep the musical vibe open, organic and funky with equal emphasis on 70's and 80's classics and rarities. If you want to go deeper, check out his collection of international soul, funk and disco with a special emphasis on Brazilian rare grooves here: https://soundcloud.com/theambassador

This is month's cover art is by well known illustrator and fine artist, Carson EllisCarson is the illustrator of a number of books for kids, including New York Times bestsellers Home (which she also wrote), The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, The Composer Is Dead by Lemony Snicket, and The Wildwood Chronicles by Colin Meloy (who happens to be her husband). Carson is also an occasional maker of editorial illustration (having worked for The New York Times, Poetry Magazine, and The New Yorker, among others) and an even more occasional fine artist represented by Nationale in Portland. And she's the illustrator-in-residence for The Decemberists.

Carson lives on a farm in Oregon with Colin, their two sons, one cat, two llamas, two goats, one sheep, eight chickens, a family of barn owls and an unfathomable multitude of tree frogs.
