The measurements on our size chart are reflective of the body size that we intend for the garment to fit. That said, every body is different. If you are between sizes, or your measurements are split between multiple sizes, there are a few things to consider. For styles that specify “fitted at waist” choose that size that is closest to your waist measurement. For styles that specify “boxy fit” choose based on the widest part of your body. Some types of garments are easier to size up or down without compromising the fit and we always try to call this out on the product page. For these garments you can easily size down for a slimmer fit or size up for a more oversized roomy fit. Choose your pants size based on your body type. If you are curvy or hourglass, pick the size closest to your hip measurements. If you are straight through the waist and hips, pick the size closest to your waist measurement. If you need more help with sizing or additional measurements please email us and we are happy to help.

How To Measure Yourself

How to measure yourself

Chest: Measure around the largest part of your chest, keeping the tape snug but loose enough that you can comfortably take a deep breath.
Waist: Measure around your natural waistline (where your body creases when you bend to the side), keeping the tape snug but loose enough that you can comfortably take a deep breath.
Hip: Measure around the largest part of your hips.
Arm Length: Put your hand on your hip so that your arm is angled. Measure from the center back of your neck to the tip of your shoulder, then continue to your elbow and down to your wrist. You may want a friend's help!

How To Measure Your Garments

How to measure your clothing

Smooth out the garment on a flat surface before measuring (but don't stretch it). All garment measurements are taken flat, so you will need to double them where necessary when comparing them to your body measurements. All measurements are approximate and will vary slightly due to the handmade nature of clothing and differences in measuring. The best way to use garment measurements is to compare them to your favorite pieces you already own.

Great, lightweight parka!

I really love my Briar parka! I have been wearing Barbour waxed cotton coats for years, but wanted to try a smaller, local brand. I was also hoping to find something made in the USA (which I just assumed these were - but they are made in China, as Barbour jackets are nowadays - just FYI in case you are looking for something made in the USA).

I was really on the fence with sizing, I was trying to decide between a L and XL - I'm a size 12 - 14 (12 in Barbour - but they are cut boxier), and followed the B&B guidelines for measurements, and was still on the fence, but since I like to wear a few underlayers (most notably a very lightweight down fitted jacket), I chose the XL and was very happy that I did - it fit perfectly, and honestly I'm not sure the L would have fit at all through the arms and shoulders, it's a bit slim cut - which is what I was assuming so that was spot on. Also I should note that the XL looks great without any under layers, so the size is definitely the right choice - I feel these coats (for outerwear) are cut on the slim side through the shoulders / arms if helpful for your own sizing.

Here are my overall thoughts:

Cut / Styling: A+ This jacket is super flattering and I love the fit and styling, I was actually surprised how great it looked, very happy here! I wish the hood was a little larger, but it's larger than Barbour and other brands I have, and I like an unusually large hood - so I think for most it would be perfect.

Quality: A+ Seems great thus far, although I have some concerns about the waxing (see below)

Weather / Rain Rating: A (for now, I have only worn this once thus far) I was very skeptical when the jacket arrived, I am used to something with a much more waxy feel - honestly the fabric barely felt waxed at all, that's probably why I waited so long to give it a go. My inaugural outing in a Seattle rainstorm was a success though! I wore the coat in solid rain for ~1 hour and 20 minutes and the rain did not go through the coat or seams. I'm wondering how long the waxing will last, but the nice thing about waxed cotton is that you can re-wax them as needed. I'm also considering going to Millerain and seeing what they recommend for re-waxing in the future.

Overall, this is a great lightweight parka - probably best for spring, or with something underneath for warmth in the winter. If I was truly going camping / hiking I would want something more technical, but for jaunts in the city or long rainy walks it is just perfect.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed review! In regards to the wax finish on the Briar, this style is made with Ranger 6oz fabric from British Millerain. It's a dry wax that is easier to care for and offers more longevity than a standard wax.
