Artist Collaboration: Graphic Tees by Christopher David Ryan

Artist Collaboration: Graphic Tees by CDR

Inspired by nature and borne out of a search for balance, our new line of tees feature artwork from the very talented artist, CDR. Working with reduced forms from the natural world, CDR’s designs are minimal, organic, and open to interpretation.
We asked CDR to tell us a bit about his idea behind the art, his process, and how he got to where he his now.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

"I was named Christopher David Ryan by my mother, but these days I just go by CDR. I do lots of things... mostly drawing, painting, pixel-pushing, deejaying, ambient music production and parenting."

How do you work/what is your process?

"My process generally involves my spending as much time as possible within my inner dimension. In there, thought patterns are observed, concepts and ideas emerge. Then, all I have to do is come back into the material world and execute the plans I was given."

What was your inspiration for this project?

"For this project, as in most of my work, my inspiration comes from my search for harmony and balance between my inner life and my external existence... by observing how they inform each other. For this project specifically, I reduced forms from the natural world into symbols to create a type of signage to prompt a viewer to insert their own perception, and thus their own subjective meaning."

How did you get your start as a freelance illustrator?

"I got my start by simply just starting. I had to do the work... then I had work to show, and finding uses for it just happened."

How has your practice changed over time?

"My practice stays pretty much the same... feel/think, create, repeat."

What work are you most proud of/what is your biggest career accomplishment?

"My biggest career accomplishment is simply the fact that I have this career at all. I draw pictures. I have done it all my life. I am proud that I can tell my children that I followed my own path, and although it is hard... it is worth it."

What is your "dream project"?

"My dream project is to do whatever I want, when I want, and get paid a ridiculous amount of money."

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

"You can't polish a turd."

What wouldn’t you do without?

"Love."

What color crayon would you be?

Infinite Rainbow Vibration.
